Requirement for a visa to enter Australia

The department processes applications by people interested in visiting or migrating to Australia. All travellers to Australia except for Australian and New Zealand citizens, and certain UN staff based in Timor must obtain a visa before travelling to Australia.

Visa Information

Permanent Entry Visas
Permanent entry applications (except general skilled, business skills and parent subclasses) for residents of East Timor are lodged, processed and decided in Dili.

Applications under the points test for skilled migration are lodged and processed at the Adelaide Skilled Processing Centre.

Temporary Entry Visas
Temporary entry visa applications (except Special Program, Entertainment sponsorship and Sponsored Family Visitor) for residents of East Timor are lodged, processed and decided in Dili.


From 2 April 2005, Sponsored Family Visitor visa (subclass 679) applications must be lodged by the sponsor at a State or Territory office within Australia.

420 Entertainment sponsorship and visa applications are lodged and processed at the Sydney Entertainment Processing Centre.

If you are sponsored by an Australian employer for a Subclass 457 Business (Long Stay) visa, you may lodge your visa application online or at an Australia office of the department. If you are sponsored by an overseas business, you can lodge your visa application with the Australia Immigration Office responsible for applications in your country. If you are sponsored by an Australian employer, you must lodge your visa application at the same office in Australia where your employer lodged papers to support your application. Medical treatment in Australia

If you are entering a medical facility in Australia for any reason and if you already hold or seek to travel to Australia on a visitor visa, business short stay visitor visa, or electronic travel authority (ETA), you will require a chest x-ray before you enter Australia.

If you seek medical treatment yourself (including pregnancy), you must apply for a medical treatment visitor visa before you travel (see 'Medical treatment in Australia' below). Further details of Australia's health checking requirements are available at the Visa Office or Information form 1163i.

This requirement does not apply to Australian or New Zealand Citizens, certain UN ID Card Holders, those holding an Australian Permanent Resident visa, or those already holding Student, Medical Treatment or most Temporary Resident Visas (except some short stay subclass 415 visas issued at Dili). If in any doubt, please contact the Visa Office before you travel.

Character and Penal Checking

People intending to lodge a migration or temporary resident visa application will generally be asked to produce a penal check certificate from countries of current and former residence. This is particularly important to note if you are a resident or a citizen of a country other than East Timor. Penal certificates for East Timor can be obtained from the Civil Registrations Office within the Department of Justice in Dili.

This office does not provide advice or otherwise deal with matters relating to visas for East Timor. All such enquiries should be directed to the nearest Embassy or Consulate of East Timor (for those outside East Timor), to the East Timor Migration Service, located on the ground floor of the Secretary of State for Security building in Vila Verde in Dili (near Obrigado Barracks).
